In the midst of discussing his present circumstances of imprisonment, he makes the profound statement: "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain" (Phil 1:21) . This verse has become one of the most widely quoted and analyzed statements in the Pauline letters, capturing the essence of Paul's devotion to Christ that the SDA Bible Commentary describes as "The Christian's life being bound up inseparably with Christ"( Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary, Volume 7. Review & Herald, October 19, 1879) . At the heart of this issue are two key interpretive questions: 1) What did Paul mean by the phrase "to live is Christ"? 2) What did
